Beyond the Safari: Tharu Culture in Sauraha

It's easy for a Chitwan trip to become entirely about wildlife — but the Tharu people, the indigenous community of the region, have shaped this landscape for centuries, and their culture is very much worth a detour.

The Tharu Cultural Museum in nearby Bachhauli houses textiles, tools and household objects that trace daily Tharu life, and is a short, easy visit from the hotel.

In the evenings, look out for a Tharu stick dance performance — a rhythmic, high-energy dance performed to drums, often staged in Sauraha village for visitors. It's a livelier, more communal counterpart to a day spent quietly watching wildlife.

If you have time, a short walk through the older parts of Sauraha village, past traditional mud-and-thatch Tharu houses, tells you as much about Chitwan as any safari does.
